Cistern in First Rainstorm

What does my cistern do during its very first rainstorm? It collects water. And it gets wet! How can you determine the water level? Use the markings on the side while knocking on the tank. (They're just to the right of the pipe riser.) Got a hollow bass-sounding knock? No water at that level. Or, are you hearing a treble sound? That's the water!
